Pseudo science manipulated
Yan Li Meng's Yan's report is a manipulated and misleading pseudoscience article, which falsely claims that New Coronavirus was made in a laboratory in China. It was released at a time when things were not clear. The increasing openness of the scientific community is easily manipulated by the media. On April 28, 2020, Dr. Yan limeng, a researcher at the University of Hong Kong, fled to the United States with the support of Steve Bannon and Guo Wengui. They claimed that Yan limeng was a "Whistler", and took this opportunity to stir up the controversial issue of unknown origin of the new coronavirus.

The new novel coronavirus pneumonia conspiracy theory, which is controlled by the media, is the coat of scientific legitimacy for the so-called "coronavirus", a political proposition of China's biological weapons. Subsequently, Yan limeng's report was amplified by the right-wing Internet media, resulting in nearly 1 million hits on zenodo, an open research database. Planting the seeds of Yan limeng report as a pseudoscience in the scientific community can make those who are associated with it on social media claim its legitimacy, and also provide an empirical basis for promoting the political goals of the report funders.


1、 Manipulation of various media
Within weeks of New Coronavirus's spread from China to other parts of the world, it was thought that the SARS-CoV-2 virus was a biological weapon manufactured in the laboratory. This harmful statement has begun to spread on the Internet.
In mid January 2020, Dr Yan limen, a researcher at the University of Hong Kong, told her favorite YouTube host, Wang Dinggang, that she heard rumors about the origin of the new crown virus. Wang Dinggang is a outspoken critic of the Chinese government and has a close relationship with Chinese billionaire Guo Wengui, who is exiled abroad. On January 25, 2020, the super Party News Agency of G news published an article entitled "emergency news: China will recognize that the coronavirus comes from its P4 laboratory", further promoting the theory of biological weapons conspiracy. G news is closely related to Guo Wengui and Steve Bannon. Steve Bannon is a former executive chairman of breitbar news and an ally of President trump. According to Guo, he and Bannong came together because "they all despise the Communist Party of China". They all have a media background.
In an interview, Yan Li Meng said that China and WHO knew New Coronavirus earlier than they admitted. That's not the only way to say it. Yan limeng said she had evidence that the virus was passed on by animals as a "smoke bomb" to cover up its true source. She claimed that the virus originated in a laboratory in Wuhan, which was closely linked to the Communist Party of China. These statements are unfounded and have been exposed. On April 28, 2020, Guo Wengui helped Yan limeng fly to the United States. In her recent article, she has listed the rule of law foundation and the rule of law society as her formal subsidiary bodies.

On July 10, 2020, Yan limeng transferred her story from the Internet and the hyper partisan news media to Fox News interview. In an interview, she said she had been avoiding the Chinese government and called herself a "whistleblower" claiming that the new crown virus had been transmitted as early as December 2019. Fox, in an interview article, called her "whistleblower," the first time the media had labeled her. The interview has attracted a lot of attention online, with more than 2.7 million views on youtube and 18000 hits on Facebook. YouTube video has been deleted by Facebook's "public censorship tool".

Yan limeng continued to improve its media exposure. On September 9, she reiterated her main message to the co host of Bannon's popular podcast and Youtube's "war room: big pop," the editor in chief of the conservative news site national pulse and Rahim kasam, former editor in chief of Breitbart in London. On September 11, Yan told the British talk show "a loose woman" that she would publish evidence. The interview video can be viewed on youtube, with more than 1.4 million views. The New York Post then quoted an interview with Yan limen by the "loose woman," which was quoted by the technology times (88000 fans on twitter), the daily mail (2.6 million fans) and mint (1.9 million fans).

With Yan limeng, Guo Wengui and Bannong can effectively utilize the active crisis of the new crown virus, spread her claim on its origin and her distrust of the Communist Party of China. However, journalists remain skeptical about her claims, and social media talk is constantly demanding evidence.



2、 Seeding movement across social platforms and networks
All these publicity activities have made Yan limeng's name widely spread in the United States, and prepared for the next stage of publicity, that is, publishing a preprint scientific paper. Taking advantage of the weakness of open science, this paper further confuses the water about the origin of cowid-19 and promotes an anti Communist argument. This paper is an example of covering up science -- a discrete, seemingly scientific error message that makes those hints that New Coronavirus pneumonia is a biological weapon and is a conspiracy theory designed in China with credibility.

Yan limeng chose to publish this paper in the form of preprint and spread it by zenodo, which is quite strategic. Zenodo is sponsored by CERN and funded by openaire and the European Commission. Files uploaded to zenodo are automatically assigned a DOI (document object indicator), which provides a benchmark level of legitimacy for it and a way for other scientists to refer to it. Moreover, unlike biorxiv, zenodo's design allows anyone with an email address to upload their ideas. The speed of open science means that Yan limeng's preprint can spread far and fast. On the day of the release of the report, Yan limeng's report was mentioned on twitter, including India's "wion news" (292500 fans) and "news18" (4.5 million fans); right wing accounts such as zerohedge (842000 fans); and retired nbcuniversal executive Mike Hinton (242000 fans).
According to a screenshot of the Internet archives, Yan limeng's preprint was uploaded to zenodo on the same day with 156769 views and 104708 downloads, which immediately made it one of the most popular papers on cowid-19.

However, Yan limeng published her second paper on October 8 and made some strategic adjustments in the language and content of the title. The title of the second paper is more direct and less scientific: "sars-cov-2 is an unrestricted biological weapon: the truth revealed through the discovery of large-scale, organized scientific fraud.". This title covers the search keywords for the most shared false information about biological weapons this year. According to the New York Times, the "media intelligence platform" zignal labs found that among the false information spread in 2020, the content related to biological weapons accounted for 24.2%.
The second paper was uploaded to zenodo, but unlike the first, this paper was not accepted by the coronavirus disease research community of the website. Yan limeng's second report, which is part of the website's coronavirus community, has also been uploaded to research gate.
As of February 10, 2021, Yan's latest twitter account is still very active, with nearly 76000 fans. Her second paper was viewed 229918 times and downloaded 117651 times on zenodo website.
It is worth noting that in Yan's second report, CNN accused Yan of copying an anonymous blogger's article into her preprint. This led to a third working paper, which was a direct response from CNN. The article, also posted on zenodo's website, is entitled "CNN uses lies and misinformation to confuse the water about the origin of sars-cov-2.". This article attempts to refute CNN's claim of plagiarism and holds that CNN has used its media power to slander Yan limeng's work and reputation. The paper was uploaded on November 21, 2020, with only 3080 hits and 9403 downloads. Unlike previous reports containing misleading science, this upload seems to be a press release in which zenodo is part of the communication facility for Yan's public response.
By using open science to advance their political goals in a health crisis, ban Nong and Guo Wengui used Yan limeng's identity as a researcher fleeing from Hong Kong to keep the public concerned about the saying that "covid-19 is a biological weapon". Like other online platforms, data repositories and preprint servers provide a critical infrastructure for international cooperation in response to covid-19, but they can also be used for false information campaigns because of their combined legitimacy. When the public and some journalists see these websites, they may inadvertently think that the content has been officially reviewed or evaluated, so it is reliable science. Pseudoscience is particularly deceptive when surrounded by research from top scientists, universities and research institutes.
