良心犯的愛和詩歌
My Love
By late YANG Tianshui (楊天水)
Translated by Yiyan Han (c) 2017-11-15
Preface
The high wall, unconcerned and senseless
and that electric wire, night and day, across the sky
cut off the spring fields from willows, rivers and green grass
and prohibit the swan of freedom from soaring high
Yet the bright moon, refusing been controlled and dominated
shines the same light of compassion on the whole world
O, it's her tender and merciful face of caring
that seduces the endless of dreams and longing

Liu Xiaobo: You Wait For Me With Dust
-- To my wife who always has a long wait, 9 April 1999
Translated by Yiyan Han (c), 2017-07-17 (with minor changes on 2020-12-25)
Again, I'm in prison and
you're on the outside
I've got books you sent
but you've got nothing left
The only thing you can do
is to sit in dust and wait (*)
Layer by layer, dust is everywhere
in the house. You're afraid of opening the curtains
and dread their stillness
will be disturbed by the sun
The dust covers the writings
on bookshelf and disfigures the pattern on carpets
When writing to me, you use a few dust particles
on the nib to cause pain in my eyes
You sit, day and night, and don't want to move
for you fear to hurt dust by your footsteps
You're doing your best to breath slowly
and writing a legend using your silence
In this suffocating era, dust particles
sacrifice the loyalty they only have
Dust fills up your look, breath and time
In your deepest heart, a tomb is being built
day after day, from the soles of your feet
inch by inch, to the chest, and to the throat
Tomb, as you're fully aware
is your best resting place
where you'll wait for me
'cause there's no disturbance
It's the dust that you love dearly, in darkness
in stillness, and in suffocation
You're waiting, and forever waiting
Wait for me with the dust
Refuse the sunlight and the flow of air
Let the dust completely bury yourself
Let yourself sleep in the dust
You only wake up till I return like an angel
Brush your skin, and dust your soul
just like the miracle of rising from the dead

Soul Of A Sparrow
⸺ To all prisoners of conscience
Translated by Yiyan Han (c), 2020-10-24
I've got the soul of a little sparrow
Who knows its goal
Though it couldn't highly soar
It always hops and takes wing
And only pauses when the rainstorm is raw
I want to fly over the mountains and wilderness
To find where the sky is free
I want to fly over the rivers and trees
To seek sincere and loving friends
And to be with my soulmates
I've got the spirit of a tough sparrow
Who has a strong and unrelenting soul
Though its body is weak and small
It's always ready to shed the last drop of blood
And would rather die than be tamed
I want to fly over the mountains and wilderness
To find where the sky is free
I want to fly over the rivers and trees
To seek sincere and loving friends
And to be with my soulmates

英譯 秦腔: 瓜女子
Shaanxi Folk Opera: Naive Woman
-- To Ms ZHANG Zhan (張展), Translated by Yiyan Han (c), 2020-11-13
A former lawyer Ms ZHANG Zhan (張展), one of the citizen reporters, travelled to Wuhan, China, the epicentre of the coronavirus outbreak, to report on the crisis in early February 2019. She has since been charged for 「public disturbance」, as later reported, also for 「fabricating lies」 by the CCP regime, and currently is under arrest. Her case is with the Pudong District Court in Shanghai. But she insists she has done nothing wrong, and has now been on hunger strike for five months.
My translation of the piece of Shaanxi folk opera, dedicated to her and written by her supporters in China, is to draw the attention of the world community. Ms ZHANG Zhan should be acquitted on all counts immediately, and compensated accordingly. Yiyan Han (c), 2020-11-13 (minor modification 2020-11-15)
Woman in the r. Wei basin doesn't like to marry out
O! ZHANG Zhan travelled far away from her hometown on the south bank
She, artless and naive, went to Wuhan where the damn pandemic began
'n' spoke out a few words as a person with humanity
but soon had problems with authority, hey hey hey
We people in the r. Wei basin, in the South Bay
belt out our folk opera with every bit of energy
to call you ZHANG Zhan to come home 'n' look after ya daddy
Please stop ya hunger strike, you're too outspoken and stubborn
You'd have achieved nothing if you went to heaven, um um um
Footnote: The words, "artless, naive, outspoken, and stubborn", that I use to interpret the meaning of 「瓜」 and 「傻」 in the Chinese folk opera should be understood positively. Because Ms ZHANG Zhan is a simple, pure, and brave beautiful young lady, trying to do good things but unfortunately living in a cruel and brutal society that lacks basic freedom and human rights.
