據《國會山報》報道，美國副總統彭斯于當地時間14日晚間，現身在華盛頓特區的美國國會大廈，向國民警衛隊人員表示感謝，並要求駐守國會大廈的國民警衛隊士兵要「保持警惕」，「保證新總統和副總統的就職典禮和宣誓的安全」。
目前，駐守在華盛頓特區周邊以及美國國會大廈的國民警衛隊隊員多達2萬名，為美軍在伊拉克和阿富汗駐軍人數總和的四倍。目前，上述國家各有2500名美軍士兵。
美國各州和華盛頓特區都有自己的國民警衛隊，承擔著服從於國家和州政府的雙重職責。而根據憲法，只有總統具有調動美軍和國民警衛隊的權力。而美國首都華盛頓特區國民警衛隊是唯一一支向總統報告的國民警衛隊。
《紐約時報》援引五角大樓和白宮消息人士的話報道，1月6日參眾兩院聯席會議期間，是副總統彭斯下令派遣國民警衛隊維持華盛頓秩序，而不是總統川普。
不過，白宮發言人麥克納尼在隨後的記者會上表示，總統已經下令派遣國民警衛隊維持華盛頓秩序。
此外，彭斯昨天還以副總統的身份連續推文，代表國家紀念剛去世的查克·葉格（Chuck Yeager）將軍。

查克·葉格是退役的美國空軍准將，是持有王牌飛行員（Ace）稱號的二戰空戰英雄，美國空軍NASA試飛員，第一個突破音障的人類，被稱為20世紀人類航空史上最重要的傳奇人物之一。
