When the @nypost comes over and puts you on Page 3 news because you have plants…A LOT of them.

I never projected where fostering a little orphan hen from the @wildbirdfund would lead, but admittedly, she’s invited a whole host of new, unexpected experiences that I wouldn’t have ever had the pleasure of having. Now, her story has been told in @modernfarmer, @nypost and @dailymail (see my Stories for more). * * Last year, I took an ovenbird that got caught in an inhumane rat trap to @wildbirdfund, and this little red hen hopped on my lap and started preening herself. The folks at WBF, whom care for thousands of hurt or orphaned birds and animals every year, convinced me to foster her after my book tour for @sugardetoxme came to completion, and I’ve had her ever since. * * I tried to get a coop in my Community Garden, but there wasn’t enough support from fellow gardeners, so K.C. from @Greenthumbnyc tipped me off to @LosSures, a senior citizen service center and food justice program here in Williamsburg, which already had a coop and a community that supported the hens—and just a short walk from my house. Yesterday we had our first volunteer day to rebuild a new, better coop—and this Saturday, May 19th, we’ll be finishing it off, so that we can bring Kippee there and get more orphaned hens for the community to enjoy. * * Around Easter, moms and dads like to get their kids “Easter chicks” or “Easter bunnies” and when the novelty wears off—they typically abandon the animals. Additionally, schools here—namely grade schools, will often incubate birds and then have no plan on what to do with them afterwards—so the birds’ fates are sealed and they wind up without homes—often in streets or city parks to fend for themselves. * * Kippee is a lucky hen (I tell her that every day, though she doesn’t seem to listen), but not all are that lucky. If you’d like to foster a bird or have a farm that would like to take some, then contact @wildbirdfund, as they are always looking for fosters and good permanent, loving homes. I hope Kippee’s story serves as an education tool–not only to educate people about hens, but also about reducing or eliminating the incubation or birds that you cannot support! ?? ph @nypost #twochicksinbrooklyn #henmom

Quick! Someone call the clean-up crew! (Kippee loves eating soil, particularly the perlite in soil mixtures). Since chickens don’t have teeth, they like eating hard stones (and even broken glass!) to help mash up the food in their crop. Just random chicken facts that you probably didn’t think you’d hear about! (PICT from @iamwellandgood x @origins #Greentheplanet Succulent Planting event). ??

Thanks to the ticket sales of the #NYCPlantSwap18 and some generous outside donations, we have officially raised enough funds to start constructing a new chicken coop and garden @lossures … If you want to know what goes behind building a coop and have the time and capacity to help, then we’d love for you to volunteer. A volunteer form link will be up in my Highlighted Stories. We’ll be there Sat May 12 and 19th!

My weekend consists of time with my feathered friend, Kippee, and the coolest cacti ?? shorts from @louandgrey. A short Insta interview with #louandgrey is up now for #thefridayfeels. #thechickenworld

Okay, okay, so she’s not the most elegant bird—more of a “flapper” than a “flier”, but heck, I’m clumsy too and I love Kippee unconditionally. Also turns out we just hit our goal for the @lossures chicken coop + garden last night, and we still have 6 days to spare! Meaning you can still donate or volunteer! We’ll be building out the coop on May 12 and 19 here in Williamsburg with the local community. Rewarding in so many ways! ( Link in bio ) ? ?? Jennifer Trahan #thechickenworld

And in other news: Kippee made a debut at the Positive Impact Awards @bkaccelerator … always a good time to see so many new and familiar faces working as a force for good: @studyny @alabamachanin @amytropolis @weareladyfarmer and more.

Special thanks to all the phenomenal volunteers who came out today to enjoy the outdoors and contribute to community beautification at the Espiritu Tierra Community Garden. We couldn't have done it without you. ?? P.S. Sorry we didn't get a photo with some of the folks who came late but massive hug to all 34 of you

I just walk ?♀?around and do what my chicken ?? tells me to do. Here, she strikes a #poultrypose @modelallianceny with @saraziff and @misskarenelson. __ No but seriously, I’d LOVE to leave my hen at home, but I haven’t figured out a way to do it without her screaming bloody murder, so in the meantime, I have to take her out, practically Baby Bjorning her to my chest! __ For those of you who have had chickens, you’ll know they are social creatures and have a clear “pecking order” and complex relationships. If one of the members of a flock leaves or dies, some of the other flock members who were closest to her, may become very sad, withdrawn or depressed. Over time, the flock dynamics shift, but I don’t know if they ever forget their fellow flock member. ___ When I began fostering Kippee around 10 months ago from @wildbirdfund, I didn’t think through the whole scenario. I didn’t imagine her imprinting on me so much, but she has. If I turn the corner, she gets nervous, but if she’s right near my feet, or if she’s strapped to me, or on my shoulder, she’s right at home. __ Not sure where this will all lead, but I’m glad she loves social settings such as these, because 1.) she always seems to bring a smile to people’s faces (except that guy in the shot, he just looks outright confused! (But he did tell me that he saw a scorpion on set for a photo shoot that same morning, so he was probably like, “What’s with the zoo creatures today?!!?”)). And 2.) she gets to support good causes like the brave and necessary work that @modelallianceny is doing for model rights and putting an end to sexual harassment on the job. As @misskarenelson said last night, she’d like to see systemic change, where a crop of new people can take the lead who are not abusers or enablers of the broken system (paraphrasing here). ___ Anyway, in the meantime, there will be a lot more #felfies happening at future events run by good people.

Hey All #nycplantswap18 Peeps: Kippee says, “Sit tight!” I know we have a Waitlist now for the event ?? (did not plan for that ??). I’m triple checking with @lululemonnyc to see what our capacity numbers are; and they’ll be opening up a second room for us, so important thing is: if you’re interested in coming, click the “Plant Swap” link in the highlighted stories above to put your name in. If we can make the room, I’ll be able to take folks off the Waitlist and then you’ll have 24 hours to grab a ticket. So very excited for this. Plus, with the matching grant through @inourbackyards, we’ve already been able to raise over $1600 for the garden and coop for @lossures! We’ll have a volunteer day for that too in May, so it’s just an all around good positive feedback loop of sharing and giving. P.S. someone reached out to me to volunteer for the event; I cannot find your message to me, so if you’re out there (or if you’d like to help out at the event), please reach out again!!! Thank you!!!! ?? @braddicksonimages

Forget a “bee ?? in your bonnet”; how about a hen ??on your head? * * When my friend, stylist @altorisonyc shared that she had this idea ?? to turn my hair into a nest for Kippee to sit upon, I admit, I was intrigued. She always pulls the best references from classical paintings and film scenes, and we got together and executed this! * * This was just one of the shots done, which just ran in @modfarm with a little story of Kippee, how she came to @wildbirdfund as an orphan chick, and how we’re raising funds for a brand new coop in the area as part of the @lossures community.
