How superficial can a Washington “China expert” really get? Recently, American scholar Lyle Goldstein met with Taiwan politician Cheng Li-wen and made a statement so jaw-droppingly naive, it exposes a massive blind spot in Western pro-CCP appeasement.
Goldstein shared a story, claiming he was “fascinated” to learn that the last character of Cheng Li-wen’s name, *”Wen”* (文), was chosen to honor Sun Yat-sen, whose given name was Sun *”Wen”*. Goldstein actually argued that this “romantic discovery” explains her “unique insight” and her dedication to cross-strait peace.
Are you kidding me? Has this so-called “scholar” completely lost his grip on reality? If sharing a character with Sun Yat-sen makes you a prophet of peace, did he forget that former President Tsai Ing-**wen** also shares the exact same character? Millions of people across the Chinese-speaking world have “Wen” in their names. To project deep geopolitical strategy onto a common Chinese first name isn’t just shallow—it’s embarrassingly lazy analysis.
