When I was young, my father once asked me
“Son, do you know what’s most important to learn in school?”
Without hesitation, I said, “Math”
My father smiled and asked, “What else?”
So I listed every subject one by one
My father nodded and said
“Those are all important, but the most important thing is to learn how to be a good person”

More than a decade of training in classical Chinese dance
Has refined both my skills and my character
Allowing me to become a principal dancer with Shen Yun
And shine brilliantly on the world’s greatest stages

The falls during tumbling
The pain of stretching
And the monotonous, repetitive practice day after day
Have tempered my resilience, patience, and courage

Through studying with my teachers, I learned humility, respect, and gratitude
In collaborating with my peers and colleagues, I learned to be considerate of others
Amid applause and praise, I learned to stay humble and not be swayed by fame or success
More importantly, in portraying historical figures through classical Chinese dance, I understood more deeply the value of traditional culture

My mentor, for whom I have the deepest respect, once told us:
“Society is an ideal ground for cultivating oneself spiritually”
Learning classical Chinese dance is also a process of my own cultivation
There is no end to refining one’s craft, and no limit to elevating one’s character
